Port Douglas is a town on the Coral Sea in the tropical far north of Queensland, Australia. It's known for its beach resorts and as a base for visits to both the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest reef system, and Daintree National Park, home to biodiverse rainforest. In town, Macrossan Street is lined with boutique shops and restaurants. Curving south is popular Four Mile Beach.
Surrounded by nature’s riches of two iconic World Heritage areas, the majestic Great Barrier Reef and the ancient Daintree Rainforest, Port Douglas is approximately 70 km north of Cairns, Tropical North Queensland. Founded in 1877, Port Douglas came into being as a port where riches from the goldfields of the Hodgkinson and Palmer Rivers were trafficked by bullock drays to be loaded onto vessels for southern cities.
Today Port Douglas welcomes visitors from all over the world to experience the riches of this international holiday mecca which until as recently as the 1960s was a sleepy fishing village.
Port, as affectionately known by locals, is enjoyed by everyone. Families, couples, singles and celebrities are all inspired by the laid back lifestyle, superb natural attractions and effortless sophistication which blend together to create the unique flavour of Port Douglas.
Whether it’s the enchantment of experiencing the magical world of the Great Barrier Reef through snorkelling, diving or in a semi-submersible at the spectacular outer reef, or seeing the timeless rainforest by hiking, 4WD safari or though the eyes of an Aboriginal guide, nature’s charms here delight everyone.
When you’re ready to rest and restore, discover the luxurious spas the region offers. When you’re ready to play, experience the famous Four Mile Beach, or step out under starry evenings to world class restaurants, funky bars and stylish cafes.
Port Douglas is Australia’s tropical jewel; a paradise which once discovered is never forgotten.
